CCUW Women United: February 2024 Newsletter

It may be winter, but the days are getting longer!

We are told that Phil didn't see his shadow which means spring is on the way! We are still working through the details for the spring and fall Women United events. More information will be available in March. Our goal is to offer events in a variety of both format and time of day, to bring more women in the Centre County community into Women United. In this month's edition we will reflect on our 2023 acheivements while we prepare for a successful 2024! If you know anyone who might be interested in learning more about Women United, consider sharing this newsletter with them - details below.

Women United in 2023

February/March

Centre County United Way welcomed Executive Director, Paula Williams to the team. As a Penn State alumna returning to Happy Valley, Williams brings a strong background in non-profit and educational leadership to the CCUW. She has extensive experience in fundraising and a passion for the United Way mission to improve lives in Centre County. Paula hit the ground running and is celebrated her first anniversary with CCUW on February 6, 2024!

April/May

In April we started the application process for the 2023 Grant Cycle. Thanks to your contributions we had $7,350 to distribute to non-profits in Centre County with the express purpose of funding programs with focus on women and children. In May we gathered for a luncheon to hear updates from 2 of our 2022 Grantees:

  • Discovery Space: awarded $3,724 for security cameras.
  • Tides: awarded $2,906 for providing 6-week grief support groups onsite at each of the 7 local school districts.

And CCUW held their first ever Over The Edge event where 46 brave particpants raised over $65K for their opportunity to rappel 110 feet down Beaver Stadium.

June/July

In June several members met to review the (8) 2023 Grant Applications. After review the final determinations were awarded:

  • CVIM: awarded $1,000 to support the Breast Health Program providing vouchers to those uninsured or underinsured for mammograms, ultrasounds, biopsies, and other testing related to the idenification and treatment of breast cancer.
  • The Makery of Central Pennsylvania: awarded $6,350 to create a designated, peaceful and secure 'Children's Space' to serve as a designated waiting area for youth and young adults in the Centre County Courthouse. This need for this space was confirmed by the staff from YSB, the courthouse and several other organizations. The Makery jumped in to spearhead this collaborative effort that exemplifies the Live United mantra!

In July we prepared to transistion from Women's Leadership Group to Women United adopting United Way Worldwide's recommendations.

August/September

In our August newsletter we rolled out the refreshed Women United branding. The Women United naming was adopted by United Way Worldwide in 2017. Transitioning to Women United helps reinforce national branding, demonstrates our partnership with our greater network, and brings an abundance of marketing and branding support. And in September we gathered to at the Garden's Restaurant to hear from our 2022 Grantees:

  • YMCA: awarded $3,600 for Dolphins, a mental health program for kids.
  • CenClear Child Services: awarded $620 to support transition of children into kindergarten.

October/November

In October we saw our grant funds in action as work on the Children's Space at the courthouse was completed. Transforming an ordinary confrence room into a welcoming, calming, safe haven for youth awaiting court proceedings. November brought our first ever Women United Afterhours Event at the Rivet, where we had the opportunity to create our own ring dishes. Jen Pencek of CentreSafe joined us for the evening to discuss the legacy of Women United supporting CentreSafe and providing initial funding for the Child Access Center. We continued the long tradition of fundrasing to provide Holiday Gift Cards for each of the Child Access Center families.

December/January

In December a dedication ceremony was held at the courthouse to celebrate the Children's Space. This project truly exemplified what great things can happen when we work together and LIVE UNITED. As a result Women United recieved some very complimentary press:

Women United Grant Update:

2024 Grant

The Centre County United Way 2023 campaign has just ended and we will know shortly how much money Women United has for our 2024 grants.

Here’s how the Women United grant process works:

  • The focus of the grant is new projects that specifically support women and/or children.
  • Any nonprofit organization in Centre County can apply for the grant. It is not limited to CCUW Partner Agencies.
  • Applications are submitted by organizations and reviewed (to see that the application is complete) by the CCUW staff in April – May.
  • Interested Women United members review the applications and select recipients in May-June.
  • Organizations selected for grants receive the funds during the summer.
  • Representatives of the organizations meet with Women United members at an event the following year to share information about the impact of the grant.
